I lost my keys while going on a run. I called Top Atlanta Locksmith LLC and the tech was fast, efficient, and professional. Oh and reasonably priced. I scoured the web for quotes and they were the lowest in price.

History of BMW Keys

Bayerische Motoren Werke, or BMW, has its origin in the German state of Bavaria. This premier automobile company is renowned for its incredible engines, premium features, and innovations, but little is written on the modernizations of its keys. BMW is one of the early adopters of advanced immobilizers and remote entry, and the company continues to push forward at the forefront of modern automobile technology. This article brought to you by Top Atlanta Locksmith is going to review the history of BMW keys. If you need your BMW key repaired or replaced, then feel free to call the friendly professionals at Top Atlanta Locksmith. Our live representatives are always ready and willing to help.

The Modest Beginnings

For a very long time, BMW simple adopted the key of any other vehicle. To be fair, there was very little interest in the whole industry to innovate key technology. Keys were just slivers of metal used to enter the vehicle, granted the locking mechanisms were evolving. In the 60s and 70s, BMW did upgrade its key slightly by adorning its keyring and embedding the key with a plastic cover to make it more aesthetic. Technically, though, it was no different than any other key in the era.

Remote Locking and Unlocking

By the 1980s, BMW started employing remote entry technology. This advancement allowed users to lock and unlock the doors of the vehicle from a distance. The ignition still depended on the traditional metal key, however. A separate black square was provided simply to control the locking mechanism of the doors.

The Introduction of Immobilizers

In the early 1990s, BMW introduced the immobilizer system. The owner of the BMW could manually enter a code when leaving the car and would have to enter the same code to start the car again. In a sense, it was just an additional key, a digital key, but the idea was a major leap in security.

Early Key Fobs

Though Siemens created the first keyfob in 1995 for Mercedes, BMW was the one to quickly jump on board with the novel idea. This technology allowed the user to lock and unlock the vehicle remotely and also allowed the driver to start the engine with the push of a button. These key fobs are extremely prevalent in today’s age, but you can give credit to BMW for taking the bold step of installing their cars with the system. Nowadays, modern models can rest in your pocket and doors can be locked and unlocked without having to pull the keys out.
