How to Open Your Car Door If You Are Locked Out

Car lockout situations happen with no warning at all. It could be when you’re in a hurry for an important meeting or from the grocery with lots of items to drop in the trunk. The worst part is when you have a pet or a baby locked inside the car. Your first thoughts would be to open the doors forcefully or even break the side window.

Agreeably, it is a horrible situation. However, you should remain calm and call the authorities if there is a pet or a child locked inside. You should also call a locksmith in Dekalb County to help open the doors.

In case you want to open the doors before the arrival of a locksmith, here are a few workarounds to help you get back in.

Coat Hanger Method

You can call it old-fashioned but it is an effective way of opening car doors that are operated horizontally. First off, you have to understand how your car locks work, then you need a hanger. Untwist the hanger and make a hook at the end. Ensure that the hook can slide into the weather stripping in the window. Then gradually and steadily jiggle the hook around until it catches the springs. You have to draw the hook up to open the door. For first-timers, this method could take some time. With patience and consistent trial, you will succeed.

Use Your Shoestring

This method sounds unrealistic. If you know your way around the lock mechanism, it becomes simple. The good thing about understanding this method is that the shoestring is readily available. If you are not wearing a shoe with lace, probably, a friend would.

The method only works on a few cars. It involves tieing a small loop in the middle of the shoelace. Insert the loop through the weather stripping in the window. Tighten when it is hooked on any of the springs or latches, then pull it up to open the door. This method may take many trials, but consistency will always win.

Use a Rod and Screwdriver

This method looks harsh and destructive. It is effective when done properly. You only need simple tools for this method - a Phillips head screwdriver and a steel rod. The steel rod is undefined because any sturdy pole instrument can work perfectly. Finding a pole or steel rod around any area could be simple. The aim is to push the unlock button but you need to open the side door using the screwdriver – then push the steel rod to open the door.

However, we do not recommend this method because it could damage the exterior of your car.
