How to Remove an Ignition Lock Cylinder Without A Key

Depending on the selected method, removing an ignition cylinder without a key requires professional expertise. The choice of method depends on the make and model of the vehicle, available tools, the skillset of professionals, and the functionality of the lock cylinder.

If any of these methods are not done correctly, it can lead to further damage to the lock cylinder. Now, when it comes to ignition repair, you don't need a key to remove a vehicle's ignition cylinder. Also, the complexity of the vehicle determines how long it will take the locksmith to remove the cylinder and the cost of the service. In this guide, we examine the ways to remove an ignition cylinder without a key.

Drill the Lock

Drilling out an ignition cylinder is one of the effective ways to remove the cylinder without a key. To drill the lock, first, insert the drill bit into the keyway and find the back of the cylinder. Then tape the portion of the bit protruding from the lock.

After that, use the tape as a symbol so that you won't drill deeper or damage the cylinder housing. However, an experienced locksmith can do this drilling without using the tape. Ensure that the size of the drill bit is about the same diameter as the keyway. Nevertheless, the bit can be slightly thicker because to drill the lock fully, there is a need for larger drill bits to widen the keyway.

Hammer the Keyway

Another method of removing the ignition cylinder is hammering the keyway. With a hammer and flathead screwdriver (which can fill the keyway), you can reach the back of the lock. The process begins by hammering the screwdriver deeper into the cylinder. This is similar to the drilling method because the hammer is doing the work of the drill. Keep on hammering until the cylinder is rotated.

Compared to the drilling method, hammering the keyway is a riskier method because the wrong blow from the hammer can damage the car. Also, if the appropriately-sized screwdriver is not used, the method will not work.

Punch the Pin

Every lock cylinder has a retention pin which is used to keep the cylinder in position inside its housing. The retention pin is a small cylinder inside a circular hole and can only be visible when the dashboard or steering wheel covers are removed. To use the punching the pin method, first locate the pin, which is usually on the sides, top, or bottom of the cylinder.

By using a smaller metal punch down the pinhole, press down the pin or destroy it so that the cylinder can be removed. If the pin is depressed or broken, it will no longer hold the ignition cylinder in position. So, it will be easy to use a screwdriver to turn and remove the cylinder.

Lock Pick

Auto lock picking will only work if the ignition cylinder is working correctly without a blocked keyway. Also, this method will not work malfunctioning cylinder. This is because the picking process mimics a working key.

The lock pick method helps eliminate the risk of having to repair other car parts in the bid to remove the ignition cylinder. However, you will need a specific auto lock pick set that is appropriate with the vehicle.

If you want to avoid the stress of removing the lock cylinder on your own, the right step is to contact a vetted locksmith service such as Top Atlanta Locksmith. Our services are top notch and also affordable. Call us today.
